A NEW
BEGINNING

Usana Farming Estate is situated in the beautiful and historic Stellenbosch Wine Region, on Klein Welmoed, the Winshaw Family farm. The Winshaws have been farming on Klein Welmoed for forty-four years; over the past few years the family has diversified the farm by introducing the Usana produce.

This new venture boasts a portfolio of four wines; Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris and a barrel fermented Chenin Blanc. The more recent additions include a natural way of farming with pasture-reared, grass-fed cattle and pasture-reared chickens, which lay delicious eggs that are supplied to restaurants and delis in the area.

Usana, a name with Xhosa heritage, represents “A new beginning” for the Winshaw brothers.

    SAUVIGNON

The Fox, a medium to full-bodied wine, was named in memory of our great Grandfather, Gideon Johannes Joubert, whose foresight and dedication to the wine industry made this creation possible. The nickname was derived from the fox stamp that he used to mark the fruit that he delivered to the co-ops.

The Fox is aged in French oak barrels, possesses soft tannins, a rich, ruby colour, and displays characteristics of dark berries, cassis and a touch of vanilla.

  • SAUVIGNON
    BLANC

This refreshing and crisp wine is the perfect companion for a warm summer afternoon. Having spent some time on the lees, it features a softer acidity, making it smoother on the palate. Stylistically it features more fruity characteristics and exhibits hints of passion fruit and gooseberry on the palate and nose.

  • PINOT
    GRIS

Pinot Gris is an offspring of Pinot Noir and is a varietal of its own. It is the most popular wine in Italy, where it goes by the name ‘Pinot Grigio’.

Our Pinot Gris spends time on the less and receives regular batonage, allowing for a slightly fuller mouth feel to develop. Subtle flavours of apple, pear and a touch of honey are evident in this crisp and refreshing wine.

  • CHENIN
    BLANC

Our Chenin Blanc comes from our family farm in Elgin and is naturally fermented in French oak. The natural fermentation adds a softer, creamier sensation while the oak delivers complexity and body. Hailing from a cooler climate, this elegant wine offers hints of peach, apple, and pear, with a touch of vanilla and toastiness from the barrel aging.

THE RANGE

The Usana wine portfolio consists of four delicious varietals, all of which possess their own unique characteristics.

Our mission and passion is creating wines that are beautiful to drink. We have moved towards a natural fermentation process that allows for our wines to fully display the unique characteristics of their grapes. The process involves utilising the wild yeast that is naturally produced by the grapes, to ferment the wine.

HAPPY CHICKENS
LAY GOOD EGGS

At Usana all of our chickens are pasture-reared, meaning they roam freely throughout our pastures and eat a natural diet consisting of bugs and grass. Every night they roost in our famous egg mobiles where they can safely lay their eggs. On a daily basis the egg mobiles are relocated in an effort to allow the chickens to graze on fresh turf. This is a highly important aspect as chickens are scratchers and in their search for food, they tend to damage the areas they graze in. Moving them daily helps to ensure that they add value to the cattle’s grazing in the form of loosening the soil and natural manure.

Interesting facts of Pasture Raised Eggs as
opposed to Battery Farmed Eggs:

  • – 30% less cholesterol
  • – Double the amount of Vitamin A and E
  • – Double the amount of Omega 3. (the good kind of fat)
  • – They contain a quarter of the saturated fats (the bad kind
    that battery eggs contain)
  • – 5 x more Beta Carotene

If you would like to try our eggs, give us a call.

COWS LOVE
GRASS

All of the Usana cattle are pasture-reared; their diet consists solely of grass and no grains. We work on a rotational grazing system where the cattle are moved twice a day to make sure that they are constantly on fresh grazing; in this way we make sure that they do not over graze a certain area and always have enough grass to eat.

The grazing patterns are based on the way the Wildebeest feed in the Serengeti; following a yearly cycle and only crossing an area once a year. This allows the ground and vegetation enough time to recover and be fresh and healthy by the time the Wildebeest return the following year. Our cattle are rotated on a monthly cycle to ensure that there is great regrowth and high-quality grass for the cattle to feed on.
